Our Favourite Wines for Spring

Despite the stubborn Victorian temperatures, spring has finally arrived. September may officially mark this date, but I always know the warmer weather is on its way when it begins getting lighter later and my cravings shift from full-bodied shiraz to an after-work light red, rosé or refreshing white.

Spring has sprung!

To welcome the new season, here are five types of wine that are perfect for transitioning from winter to spring:

1. Chablis

Chablis is the home of crisp, leaner style Chardonnay. There are a lot of wonderful bottles on the market at good value; it’s a great shift if you’ve been drinking, buttery, oaky Chardonnays all winter.

2. Sparkling

Cava and Processo are the Spanish and Italian answers to Champagne, respectively. They are often more affordable and a little less serious, but that’s not to say they can’t be just as delicious; a glass of these dry, fresh bubbles is the perfect way to ring in the new season.

3. Rosé

This will come as no surprise, as rosé seems to be the Millennial wine of choice (see: #roseallday, Millenial pink, and White Girl Rose), but rosé has its place, and it is exactly at this time of year. As a general rule, I opt for the stuff that is copper or apricot in colour (I like those from Provence), rather than the deep pink coloured bottles, which sometimes taste a little like grape juice.

Rosé season is upon us – try bottles that are peachy or apricot in colour

4. Lambrusco

If you’re a red wine drinker, Lambrusco can be a really wonderful way to treat your spring fever; the Italian varietal from Northern Italy can be dry or off-dry, and is slightly fizzy – perfectly suited for a sunny happy hour.

5. Pinot Noir

Okay, I unashamedly drink Pinot year-round, but some of the softer, younger ones are ideal for transitioning from winter to spring; most new Yarra Valley Pinot Noirs would be lovely, especially when slightly chilled.

If you’re interested in some of our favourite Yarra Valley Pinot Noirs at a bargain, check out this post – these are perfect for this time of year! If you want to know more about what exactly rosé is, check out this post.

Love this list! The moment the evenings get lighter, I instinctively reach for rosé or a crisp Chablis. I totally agree about choosing those copper-toned rosés, they’re so much more nuanced than the bright pink ones. And Lambrusco! Such an underrated warm-weather treat, especially slightly chilled on a balcony. I was actually hunting for a bottle the other day and ended up reading about Harvest customer service while comparing shops, the things we do for wine.
