Our Favourite Wines for Summer
As we approach summer in the Southern Hemisphere, I’m already planning which wines to keep on deck through the season. We’ve already had a few hot days, giving us a taste of what’s to come, during which I seized the opportunity to pick up some summery bottles I’ve been wanting to try.
The following wines are my go-to’s when each summer rolls around, with a few suggestions around Australian producers I’ve recently discovered. Whether you opt for these specific makers or not, I suggest stocking up on at least a few of these varietals to prepare for the impending heat:
Crémant
If you haven’t already seen our piece on why Crémant is so great, check it out here. Crémant is French sparkling made in the same way as Champagne, only outside of the Champagne region – grapes and expression vary a bit from bottle to bottle, but Crémant is usually quite fresh with bubbles on the softer side, and is always pretty affordable – hello summer staple.
Sparkling Rosé
Yes, more sparkling, but summer is basically an excuse to drink sparkling for three months straight, right? Beyond white wine grapes (which is mostly what you’ll see Crémant made with), rosé is also lovely when there’s a bit of fizz involved – I’ve been loving the Betrand Bespoke L’Ecume du Jour from Heathcote – it’s a delicate, pale wine that’s a bit lower in alcohol and high in acidity. Bring a bottle of this to your next picnic in the park and your company will thank you.
Rosé
And yes – a standard rosé of course makes the list for summer drinking. Specifically, I’ve been digging Pyren Vineyard’s Little RaRa’s Rosé – the blend of Shiraz, Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc, aged for just under a year in oak on the lees, has a bit of weight and fun to it. An easy, accessible bottle that will please a crowd.

Chardonnay
Chardonnay is a solid choice when pairing wine with your summer menus. Rocco Esposito of Project 49 is doing a nice fruity Chardonnay from Beechworth – with notes of citrus, some sweetness, a hint of oak and just enough structure, this well-balanced wine is the stuff I’ll be pouring alongside barbecue and seafood all season long.

Riesling
I love a dry Riesling during the summer months – refreshing and crisp with notes of citrus, there’s no better time to enjoy it than a balmy summer evening. The Clare Valley is known for producing wonderful, vibrant and classic expressions of the varietal, though Watervale’s Atlas label is doing something slightly different – still bright, dry and acidic, but not overly so, it’s a very drinkable Riesling. Keep some of this in the fridge for those warm summer nights.
