What to do on a trip to Melbourne: a melting pot of eating experiences

melbourne skyline

If you have never been to Melbourne, then you should do yourself a favour and plan a trip soon! Quite simply, Melbourne is an amazing place, centred on its unique blend of different cultures and culinary options. Indeed, this is clearly reflected in the cuisine, restaurants, cafes, bistros, wines and bars. Quite simply, one of the world’s most liveable cities boasts an incredibly eclectic dining and culinary scene, which you can’t afford not to sample when visiting this acclaimed Australian city – along with some stunning wineries close by!

Staying in

While Melbourne is highly regarded for its restaurant scene, sometimes you just want to stay in and relax. However, if you’re not totally keen on cooking a fully-fledged meal, there are many alternatives. You can easily find plenty of quick yet healthy recipes online, such as this terrific Thai beef salad dish.

If you’re on a work trip in the CBD, you might not have much time for home-cooking, so getting a meal kit delivered might be convenient for you. By doing this you’re also ensuring that you stick to a healthy diet of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. If you weren’t ordering ready to cook meals, you’d probably just be ordering fast-food, which is not what you want to do given the low nutritional value of such options.

The cafes

Regarded as the coffee capital of Australia, Melbourne is filled with an extensive array of great café strips. Indeed, the cobbled streets are permeated by the distinct and intoxicating aroma of high-quality espresso. If you’re only in town for a few days, you should definitely explore Australia’s most vibrant café scene!

If you have a week or two in Victoria’s capital then it is worth using at least a day or two to visit some of the nearby vineyards. The Yarra Valley, for example, is only about 90km from Melbourne, while the Mornington Peninsula is even closer. Both of these regions are famous around the world for the quality of wines they produce, so going on a tasting tour of one (or both) of them is a lot of fun!

Heathcote is further away and is in fact closer to Ballarat than Melbourne. If you want to get the full experience of Victoria’s wineries then you should include it on your list, but you will need to book accommodation in the area. Doing the round trip from Melbourne is a very big day – especially if you plan to sample a few of the region’s excellent drops!

The bar scene

Granted, this isn’t exactly the healthiest option, however, there is nothing wrong with some luxuries in moderation. If you’re up for a night of socialising and drinking, Melbourne boasts a plethora of unique and diverse pubs. The city’s vibrant bar scene can fulfil the needs of anyone on a night out. Whether you are looking for classy cocktails, a couple of cheap local beers or a mixture of both, Melbourne has something for you.

Rooftop pubs

If you are on the lookout for incredible views, you simply can’t go past Bomba, which is a modern Spanish bodega with an all-weather rooftop. Likewise, the aptly named Rooftop Bar sits atop the popular Curtin House, which is located on Swanston Street in the heart of the CBD. Stop on by for some great views and terrific house drinks.

Laneway pubs

If you’re not desperate for the beautiful views of Melbourne, make sure you check out some of the more indie and eclectic laneway bars. Bar Ampere is a Parisian-style bar on Russell Place, equipped with an imaginative and creative menu. This place is perfect for those wishing to expand their culinary horizons. Likewise, Ferdyduke is a European-themed pub that is a great place for casual beers and a bite to eat. Wash down your drinks with a delicious Frankfurt, mixed with funky condiments.

The restaurants

While the Australian restaurant scene is incredibly highly regarded, Melbourne is seen as the apex of that culinary class. Melbourne is viewed as a seriously high-quality foodie town, bolstered by a dizzying amount of cuisine options.

North side

If you’re in the North side of Melbourne, you simply can’t pass up on some delicious sushi from Minamishima. This incredible sushi bar is perfect for those special occasions, so be prepared for a high-quality fifteen course endeavour assembled in front of your very eyes. Likewise, if you’re pining for immaculate service and contemporary cuisine, you simply can’t pass up on Cutler & Co. and their extensive wine collections.

South side

Melbourne’s south side is much like its north side: filled with high-quality restaurants. If you’re in the mood for some divine seafood, you simply can’t miss out on Matilda 159 Domain, which is run by Melbourne chef, Scott Pickett. Indeed, the seasonal flavours are simply incredible and it’s a bit more casual than some of Pickett’s more fine-dining outlets (so you’re guaranteed a filling meal).
