Ocean Eight: Boutique At It’s Best
Review
Address: 271 Tucks Road, Shoreham Vic 3916
Varieties: Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sparkling Cuvee
Experience
Venture away from the highly trodden tracks of the main Red Hill region and you’ll be well rewarded for your efforts. Ocean Eight sits just out of reach of the usual touristy hustle and bustle, in a refreshing and lush forest setting.
Although they offer a smaller cellar door and wine selection, the team has gone big on perfecting the varieties they do create; particularly their Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With Wine Compass, sampling these fine wines is an experience in itself. You’ll be able go get amongst the ageing wine in Ocean Eight’s beautiful underground barrel room, while enjoying an amazing tasting of their wines. For an extra fee, for those who are really keen we can arrange a premium tasting which includes a flute of sparkling and some special extras.

Wines
Although Ocean Eight’s wine list doesn’t run too long, there’s no shortage of things to say about their offerings. Using wild yeast fermentation and growing everything on their meticulously sculpted vineyard, they have certainly put the ‘quality over quantity’ sentiment into practice.
Ocean Eight’s bragging rights include a top selling and complexly noted Pinot Gris, plus an award winning Chardonnay heralded for its vibrant and distinctive taste. They also specialise in 2 varieties of Pinot Noir; their unfiltered and slightly cloudy Ocean Eight Pinot with a classic earthiness that continues to develop over time, and their premium Aylward Pinot which follows the typical forest floor characteristics of a good Pinot, plus the added sweetness of red berry notes bubbling on the surface.
Setting
It’s only fitting to have a beautifully crafted setting to suit your beautifully crafted wines. Following down a tree-lined driveway, you’ll arrive at a well-appointed colonial-style homestead. The English gardens, forest-like surrounds and carefully curated vineyards amplify the picturesque setting even further, making it a spot that you’ll want to take the time to take all in.
What we like
What’s not to like about sampling premium wines in a gorgeous setting? And not only are the wines premium they have a cellar door and overall tasting experience to match. You can understand why we can appreciate this stop.
What we don’t like
Only suitable for smaller wine loving groups, it’s not for everyone, but for the right groups this can often end up a favourite on the day.
