Finding a cellar door that has beautifully scenic views, a comfortable and casual space to enjoy wine and friendly and informative cellar door staff can seem a lot to ask. Our prayers have been answered though with the welcome presence of Rahona Valley on the Mornington Peninsula.
What awaits you upon arrival to this cellar door is nothing short of breathtaking, and it’s not just the picturesque positioning of their vineyard, although that is a pretty big drawcard. A visit to Rahona Valley is like visiting your best friend. Welcoming, warm and full of down to earth charm and hospitality. Owner Toby Pieters is an absolute legend who knows exactly why his wines are so great, and is happy to share with you what makes them so special.
It’s a pretty generous offering here on taste, so settle in. You can generally taste up to 8 wines here, each more enticing than the next. One of the few on the Peninsula to be growing Gewurztraminer, they do an exception job of it. Fresh, dry, with subtle notes of lychee and limes. The Chardonnay is a real winner too, crisp, smooth and refreshing. They’re also pretty proud of their late harvest Riesling, with intense honey and dried fruit aromas, but with a clean finish and natural acidity that shines through.
You might also find a couple of vintages of Pinot to try if you’re in luck, and comparing each to the other is a real treat. The ’15 showing subtle spice and floral notes, while the ’16 has slightly more oak influence and herbaceous notes. Both delicious and great examples of expert winemaking. A real star though, is the 2015 Sparkling Blanc de Noirs. Made from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the super fine, single line of fine bubbles make for an elegant and vibrant sparkling wine you’ll definitely want to take home with you.
You’ll feel like you’ve entered your own private wine haven, secluded from the rest of the world. You won’t necessarily expect it when you turn down the seemingly residential driveway, but what awaits down below is truly amazing. A gorgeous vineyard surrounded by native forest. One of the best placed vineyards on the Peninsula. From the vines, you make your way up to the decked outdoor area of the cellar door. A cool, relaxed and inviting space that provides the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a host of amazing wines. The cellar door itself looks like a hip bar, with modern finishes and friendly faces.
