De Bortoli is a name that many people around Australia and many other parts of the world would be familiar with. They are a huge label with many varying price points, including super cheap sub-labels like Sacred Hill. At their cellar door in the Yarra Valley, they have done a good job of creating an experience that doesn’t feel like a production line like some large wineries. The cellar door isn’t huge and the service is personable. There are different levels of tasting to undertake and the option of including cheese samplers too.

Wines / Beverages
As mentioned, their wines span the gamut of really cheap to really expensive. For the standard tasting, they don’t go near the lower labels, but stick more to the mid-high range wines. Some of these wines are excellent and others are made for easy drinking, so you get something for everyone. They are really famous for their Noble One dessert wines, which you can add to your tasting for a fee too. For any interested there is also premium and private tasting options available.

The restaurant Locale @ De Bortoli offers modern food with an Italian bent. It’s a bit on the fancier side but not overly so. It includes a nice range of house made pastas and meat based mains.

Set on the lovely estate, there are nice views from the restaurant. The cellar door is a bit more enclosed but has a nice, warm vibe and lots of different spaces for tastings. It’s a little way out from the busy part of the Yarra Valley, which is an advantage too.
What we like
They have done a good job of making the cellar door feel intimate, even though they are a huge wine label and producer.
What we don’t like
It can get very busy and touristy which can detract from the intimate feel they have tried so hard to create.
