Combine the charm of Northern Italy and the stellar wine-producing elements of the Yarra Valley and you have one special estate: also known as Soumah. It’s a cosy but well-appointed cellar door for intimate tastings, leading through to the dining room for delicious cuisine.

While your palate is fully fulfilled, your eyes are equally rewarded, as the dining room looks out over stunning vines and a small but picturesque hillside.

The Soumah estate boasts a really great range of varieties, including some more out of the box kinds. Their French-inspired Viogner, their specifically named Savarro, their spicy, zesty, and honey-sweet Wild Savagnin, and their fun dessert Brachetto are just a few of the uncommon offerings you’ll find here.

They’re not afraid to go bold with big reds, either, which you’ll notice from their full-bodied Syrah, another unique taste to test.

The atmosphere is casual and friendly, but you’ll be treated to a quality of food that you’d expect from somewhere with gold-plated dinnerware. Rich and hearty dishes that show a twist on traditional meat and pasta dishes, as well as fantastic charcuterie and cheese platters are on offer.

Rolling hills set behind a sprawling mass of neatly laid out vines – sounds like a postcard sent from Tuscany? Well, not quite, but it’s also exactly what your eyes get to feast on when you’re feasting on the menu at Soumah.

While it has all the quality and capabilities for being a bit pretentious, the estate is anything but, maintaining an attractive charm and cosiness that will have you feeling right at home.

What we like

Who doesn’t like an intimate setting away from the hustle and bustle of the regular tourist hot spots? Soumah is small but cosy, off the beaten track without being in the middle of nowhere, and unpretentious but still delivering stellar views and food.

What we don’t like

Maintaining a level of cosiness makes it difficult to find room for big groups, so this is one demographic that Soumah can’t really cater for.
