Alchemy Distillers: Drinking outside the square

Address: 242 Maroondah Hwy, Healesville VIC 3777

Varieties: Gin, Vodka and Whisky (Moonshine)

One of the newest and coolest distilleries to hit the Yarra Valley, you certainly get the feeling you’ve stepped into a place like no other when you walk through the doors at Alchemy Distillers. From the unique antler interiors to the stunning copper stills, you’ll definitely want to know more about how these guys make their rare and diverse range of spirits!

With a core range that includes Chamomile Dry Gin, Quinoa Vodka and Moonshine (unaged whiskey, once produced illegally) together with special small batch releases of spirits, often produced with unexpected ingredients. It’s definitely not your usual line-up on tasting here, as unconventional experiments pay-off to create a surprising yet superbly crafted drinks.

The team at Alchemy are all too keen to share with you the creativity and science that makes their distillation process so fascinating with a private guided tasting and up-close look at the distillery.

You can find Alchemy on the main street of Healesville, set back behind a strip of local stores. There’s plenty of room in the outdoor garden area to spread out and enjoy a shot of Moonshine in the sunshine or listen to some live music on a Saturday afternoon.

If you prefer to stay indoors, you can take a seat by the bar and gaze at the ornamental deer heads that watch-over the distillery which once housed a bakery in the 1800s.

What we like

Thinking outside the square is what Alchemy does best. They’re not afraid to push the boundaries of what people might come to expect from a distillery and definitely don’t play it safe.

We also love that you can kick back and grab a drink at any time from their bar menu. They have a condensed but impressive cocktail list that showcase their spirits – think classics with a contemporary twist, but if you need a break from the hard stuff they also have a rotating beer and wine list to mix things up. A great place to spend the afternoon.

What we don’t like

We are finding it hard to fault. It’s only open Thursday to Sunday so if your wanting to visit earlier in the week then you will sadly be disappointed.
