Coldstream Hills: Premium Yarra Valley Wines with a view

Address: 29 Maddens Lane, Coldstream VIC 3770

Varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon

A premium destination for iconic Yarra Valley wines, Coldstream Hills has a long-standing history as one of the most well-regarded cellar doors in the region. Founded in 1985 by respected wine writer and judge James Halliday, it’s any wonder that the wines on offer here are a standout, while still being an approachable and welcoming cellar door.

With a focus on what the Yarra Valley is best known for, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, you’ll also be treated to an extensive range of award winning wines. From the accessible core Yarra Valley Range which includes a sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. To the single vineyard wines which offer you the chance to explore the diversity of varying sites throughout the Yarra Valley. For those serious about their Reserve wines, there’s a stunning range which includes a textural cool climate Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

With uninterrupted views of the Great Dividing Range, this small but embracing cellar door provides a feast for the senses. Take in the views from the open veranda with a glass of wine and cheese platter as you marvel at the inspiring surrounds.

What we like

No matter what your preference of variety or budget, the cellar door team are all too happy to share with you what has made Coldstream Hills a favourite of many for so long. Chances are they’ll also have a bottle from their Reserve range open if you’re lucky, so you can experience the full gamut of what’s on offer.

These guys are also one of the few places in the Yarra Valley that run vineyard and winery tours so if you interested in something a little bit special over and above the ordinary tastings then you can join a tour at 11.30am most weekends that take you behind the scenes.

What we don’t like

This is quite a small cellar door, so larger groups will often be a problem. Having said that, they’ve recently introduced a seated area out on the veranda for those who are happy to take in the views from the outside.
