Coombe Farm – Melba Estate: A Bewitching History
Address: 673-675 Maroondah Highway, Coldstream VIC
Varieties: Brut Rose, Sparkling Pinot Noir, Viognier, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Arneis, Rose, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Merlot, Shiraz
Coombe the Melba Estate may have one of the most interesting histories of all wineries on the Yarra Valley. That’s largely due to the estate’s original owner – Dame Nellie Melba – a legendary opera singer who was most active in her career in the 1880s and 90s.
She led quite the extravagant lifestyle, taking baths in imported champagne and having lavish, Gatsby-style parties – one of which included Charlie Chaplin falling into her swimming pool. You can learn all about that through the gallery and garden tours on-site, simply enjoy the casual and friendly cellar door that’s on offer, or, of course, do both!
The estate’s Coombe Farm wines covers plenty of ground and offers a nice selection in whites, reds, and sparkling varieties. They have their signature Estate Range label that covers regional classics, with a particular nod to our favourites, their sparkling and Pinot Noir numbers.
Coombe the Melba Estate also features a Tribute Range, which is an aptly named range that aims to honour winemakers of the past, made using their best vintages and barrels.

Although we haven’t sampled it yet, the restaurant at Coombe the Melba Estate seems to have an impressive spread. They serve up lunch and afternoon tea every day of the week, plus a brunch special over the weekend.
Their menu seasonally changes and is enjoyed while you look out onto the perfectly sculpted gardens and courtyard.
The team behind Coombe the Melba Estate did a fantastic job re-purposing part of the estate of Dame Melba. The motor home has been renovated into a restaurant, the gardens and courtyard fixed up, and the old servants quarters and stables have been repurposed into one quite striking setup.
Beyond the impressive history of the estate and the even more impressive way in which they have maintained its significance, Coombe the Melba Estate boasts an overall beautiful setting. The cellar door, restaurant, provedore, and gardens are all fashioned in a way that makes any visit here all the more memorable.
What we like
Coombe the Melba Estate’s story really makes this place stand out, especially for those who are fans of Dame Melba, or just history buffs in general.
What we don’t like
Groups are not permitted to visit later in the day, which can be a bit restricting when organising a tour. That being said, if it’s a place you want to visit, we’ll do everything we can to make it happen.
