Pimpernel Vineyards: Best Kept Secret of the Yarra Valley
Address: 6 Hill Road, Coldstream, VIC 3770
Varieties: Chardonnay, Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Noir, Syrah/Shiraz, GSM
Bigger is not always better, as proven by the humble estate of Pimpernel Vineyards. Being on the smaller side, visitors often get the chance to be greeted and taken through a tasting by either the business development and cellar door manager, owner or winemaker.
And what a tasting it is. Their range is fantastic and our hosts have consistently rated it their favourite experience in the Yarra Valley.
For more interesting wine stuff, follow us on:
Pimpernel has a unique range of wines that are all hand picked, dry grown and treated with the most delicate hand. It’s a lot more labour intensive but leads to wines that are not only a true expression of the vineyard, but also the year they were grown.
- Chenin blanc in the Yarra Valley, a wine with a slight bit of residual sugar that really excites tasting groups
- Chardonnay, in the more generous style is always a favourite
- Viognier is a real treat for red and white wine drinkers alike
- Their range of pinot noirs show the masculine and feminine styles and are our pick for the finest in the Yarra Valley
- Their selection of shiraz and syrah are always a hit
The wines combined with the cellar door experience, make this a must visit for wine lovers.
Just off the beaten track behind its sprawling and impressive neighbours Levantine Hill and Rochford, Pimpernel Vineyards is a much smaller and more modest setting, but it suits the wine and experience perfectly. There is a well designed cellar door and private tasting room for more in depth groups.
What we like
You’ve got plenty of big hitters on the Yarra Valley that may have bigger names, but Pimpernel is a truly remarkable and largely undiscovered gem. If you want to delve a little deeper into the Valley beyond the usual large estates, Pimpernel offers exactly that, with wines and experience that are truly special.
What we don’t like
If you want to discover the untouched aspects of one of Australia’s most premium wine regions, you have to be a little serious about your love for wine. As you would expect, Pimpernel takes themselves and their wine pretty seriously – which is great for true connoisseurs, but isn’t suitable for more rowdy or social groups like birthday parties or hens
