Oakridge Chefs: Matt and Jo
With the Tour & Taste at Oakridge fast approaching we had a chat to chefs Jo Barrett & Matt Stone about what you can expect on July 3
How long have you both been chefs?
Jo : I have been a chef for the last 10 years
Matt : I have been a chef for 13 years
When did you start cooking at Oakridge and what was it that appealed to you about the roles?
We took on Oakridge last August (2015).
The biggest appeal to both of us was the space and potential to grow food at Oakridge. It was matched by owners who believed in our ethos. We loved the idea of being in the Yarra Valley surrounded by nature and a community who thrive on producing food and drink.
What are your favourite Oakridge wines at the moment?
Our fav at the moment is Pinot Meunièr. It’s a cellar door release.
On July 3 you’re taking our guests on a kitchen garden tour. What’s growing well at this cold time of year?
All the greens are busting out of the ground.
Silver beet, mustard leaf, broad beans, kale turnips, warrigal greens
Carrots are starting too.
When Pep Events and Wine Compass approached Oakridge about this winery and garden tour, lunch, interview and tasting, marketing manager Danny Kane said “We don’t usually do wine tours but we do things like this.”
What is it about the Tour & Taste on July 3 with Pep & Wine Compass that you think is unique and that you’re looking forward to?
We are looking forward to cooking for people who love food and wine. We think we offer a true Yarra Valley experience and have done a good job at showcasing what the Valley produces. We are especially looking forward to the Q&A, we love getting to meet the people we have cooked for.
